A comic that arrives in great shape can lose its condition quickly if it is stored badly. The good news: protecting a collection is cheap and easy.
Bag and board every comic
Slide each comic into a polyethylene or Mylar bag with an acid-free backing board. The board keeps the book flat and stops the cover from bending. Use a snug size so the comic cannot slide around.
Store them upright in a proper box
Short and long comic boxes are made to hold bagged and boarded books upright. Pack them firmly enough that they do not lean or sag, but not so tightly that you have to force them in. Avoid stacking heavy weights on top of flat comics.
Keep the environment steady
- Keep boxes away from direct sunlight, which fades covers.
- Avoid basements and attics where humidity or heat swings are common.
- Keep them off bare floors in case of leaks.
- Handle with clean, dry hands and pick comics up by the edges.
Rotate and check
Every so often, check a few books for signs of moisture or pests, and swap out any bags that have gone yellow or brittle.
