Back issues are older comics, as opposed to this month’s new releases. Collecting them is a great hobby, and getting started is simpler than it looks.
1. Pick a focus
Trying to collect everything gets expensive and overwhelming. Choose a character, a team, a writer or artist, or a single series. Many collectors start by completing a run of one title, like X-Men, Spider-Man or Batman.
2. Set a budget
Decide what you are comfortable spending each month. Back issues range from very affordable to very expensive, so a budget keeps the hobby fun.
3. Understand condition
A comic’s grade has a big effect on its price. Learn the basics in our post on comic book grades, and decide whether you want a collectible copy or an affordable reader.
4. Buy the story, not just the hype
Key issues, such as first appearances, tend to cost more. There is nothing wrong with chasing them, but some of the best finds are the ordinary issues in between that fill out a run.
5. Protect what you buy
Bag, board and store your comics properly from day one. See how to store and protect your collection.
